Guide
Before you buy a used car (UK)
A quick, plain-English checklist so you don’t rush into a used car that is too expensive, unsafe or a headache to run.
1. Work out the real monthly cost
Don’t just look at the price on the window. A “cheap” car can still be expensive each month once you include everything.
- Finance or loan payment (if you’re not buying outright)
- Insurance – get quotes for your age, address and no-claims
- Fuel – based on your mileage and the car’s MPG
- Road tax (VED) and MOT
- Servicing and tyres
2. Check history before you travel
Before you spend time and fuel viewing a car, ask the seller for a few basics and check them online.
- Registration number and current mileage
- MOT history from the official government website
- Service history – full, partial or none
- Number of previous owners
