1. Can this van actually do your work?

Start with what you carry every day and how you work, not just the van you like the look of.

Payload – can it legally carry your tools, parcels or materials?
Load space – is it long and high enough for what you carry most often?
Access – side door and rear doors easy to use on tight streets?
Cab comfort – can you sit in it for hours without pain?

2. Check how hard it’s already been worked

Vans live a tougher life than most cars. You want to know if you’re buying the end of someone else’s shift.

Look for heavy wear in the load bay and driver’s seat
Check MOT history for repeated advisories on suspension, brakes or tyres
Listen for knocks from suspension over bumps on the test drive
